— on the whole, yamamoto treats all his allies with the same level of effusive camaraderie. despite their shared experiences (especially throughout the future arc), he admittedly doesn't know kyoko very well, although he's no less polite or affable toward her for it. he's much more acquainted with haru due to her continual assistance/presence in his life, although he considers them both good friends.

initially, not much differentiates the fictionalized town of namimori from any conventional municipality in postmodern japan: it's an exercise in run-of-the-mill tedium, from its coterie of plain storefronts to its sleepy, indolent charms. the stupor of an endless monotony — mildness gone tangible in the outline of shrines and schools and homes strung together in neat, unvaried rows. and perhaps namimori, given sentience, would've resigned itself to that insipid, somnolent inconsequentiality if it weren't for the machinations of the mafia — for a history that repeats, for the feral ideals of conviction and loyalty and deceit and corruption running rampant through the generations. black humor and honest lies held in tandem; fatalism in the grasping palms of dead men, intractably spilt open with the blood of their sins. but fast-forward ten generations first, because this is where it starts:

living long past his prime, the ninth vongola boss (vongola nono), timeteo, vainly seeks out a viable successor to inherit the legacy of the famiglia. with the three main contenders for the position already shuffled off the mortal coil, he returns to the roots of the mafia's formative years and finds a worthy candidate in one of the first vongola boss's descendants — an unremarkable boy by the name of tsunayoshi "tsuna" sawada living out a quiet, humdrum life in japan. for better or worse, he dispatches reborn from italy to the town of namimori on the express order of training the young adolescent to eventually take on the mantle of becoming the tenth vongola boss (vongola decimo).

predictably, this goes about as well as any ordinary 14 year-old student can expect to acclimate to an infant-sized hitman calmly — and rather articulately — imparting all intimate details of their mafia training regimen before beating the ever-loving tar out of him at his (all too reasonable) dissent. for all of its seriousness, the universe of katekyo hitman reborn! is certifiably quirky. and that mix of eclecticism and solemnity never misses a beat from the point tsuna encounters reborn, whether it's dying will bullets that don't fatally wound as much as they turn people into raving exhibitionists with distorted strength, time travel bazookas that switch tiny children with their decade-later counterparts for five minutes at a time, or babies capable of simultaneously roundhouse kicking middle school students off the couch and shooting a barrage of bullets into the cushioned upholstery without so much as breaking a sweat. it doesn't end there either, if examples of spontaneously conjured food reeking of poison or a series of dentures that fuse animalistic properties onto its users when worn are anything to go by. everything, narrative-wise, must be taken with a grain of salt — even barring these instances of transformative magic and quasi-mysticism, as rooms would sooner combust in an inferno of flame and heady regret before anyone, save for a few members of the main cast, discerned that anything was slightly amiss.

but even these events have their polarizing disparities; for example, the fallout after tsuna comes to terms with the fact he's unwittingly thrashed the ninth vongola boss half to death while he was ensnared in the machine gola mosca, or the altercations between hayato and bianchi concerning the fidelity — or lack thereof — in the mafia father they share. even yamamoto, complacent in his own affairs, grappled with his own share of debilitating traumas (the threat and aftermath of his dad's death, betrayals in trust and camaraderie, and situations where the possibility of death remained wholly imminent). but even in those dire straits, they kept their resolution to overcome their personal crises steady, and in the long run, grew stronger for it.

however, there is no story without characters — without life to breathe into this bizarre coming-of-age tale of supernatural circumstances. by making the choice, intentional or not, to gravitate toward one particular tsunayoshi sawada, a handful of some rather distinctive individuals were inevitably compelled to align themselves with the vongola famiglia. of course, it wasn't without reasonable incentive that tsuna's circle of friends (and some begrudged comrades) banded together as his guardians to unremittingly prevail against their various adversaries: to protect the lives of those they cherished, to rectify unjust and malevolent transgressions, and to ultimately ensure a peaceful world.

and yet — the convergence of fate and coincidence can't be found within the constraints of a present day timeframe, but rather by juxtaposing tsuna's experiences with those of giotto, the initial founder of the highly revered vongola famiglia (which at the time bore more congruity to a vigilante group than a genuine mafia). the first vongola boss (vongola primo) fought alongside his allies for the same, unflinching ideals of resolute compassion. they also upheld an essential balance of power as one part of three forces comprising the trinisette (also known as 7³), safeguarding the earth alongside the giglio nero (another mafia family) and the arcobaleno (the world's seven strongest, cursed "infants"). the task of preserving the planet was passed down throughout the ages, eventually coming full-circle with the tenth generation of vongola and tsunayoshi sawada, the one individual who could revert the thus-corrupted mafia legacy he inherited to its original altruistic state.

yamamoto's own narrative coincides with the vongola only by chance. his journey starts with befriending tsuna and ends similarly, save for one main distinction: the word friend, for him, has become synonymous with family. spending his daily life in the company of his close companions, trumping mukuro and company at kokuyo land, becoming the vongola's rain guardian and defeating the varia, keeping byakuran from destroying the world, resolving the differences they held with the shimon family, and eventually saving the arcobaleno from what should've been an inevitable destiny — they're all integral moments in his life as his conviction to follow tsuna only intensified with time. and what initially began as a fun "mafia game", just another way to idly pass the time, ultimately became something he deeply cherished, whether in regards to the friends he'd sacrifice his dreams in a heartbeat for or his simple aspiration to protect everything he considers important without relenting once to his adversaries.

SERIES NOTE: well, it did start out as a gag one-shot by akira amano that eventually became a 400+ ch manga and 200+ ep anime. truth be told, it's afflicted by many of the same factors that typically hamper large, drawn-out works in the shonen genre, but it's quite an entertaining read/watch for its own sake if you've got the time to spare. high points: original premise, memorable characters, an engaging atmosphere, action-packed build-up/exposition/world expansion, decent balance between humor and seriousness, and hefty degrees of emotional investment if any of the aforementioned aspects appeal to you. low points: largely cliché, obnoxiously eccentric at times (take the illogical aspects of it with a grain of salt), comedy schticks (arguably) exaggerated to the point of overkill, a repetitively/predictably formatted plot, awkward pacing (see: slow beginning), and downplayed potential. tl;dr: khr! is a mixed bag, but for the most part i genuinely enjoyed reading it!! i would recommend it to anyone who enjoys lightheartedness with their action.
